October is internationally recognized as Breast Cancer Awareness month. As such, many efforts are made in October specially to help combat the deadly disease of Breast Cancer. One such effort is the Denis Thwaites 5K run. The event is staged annually by the Jamaica Reach to Recovery, a voluntary group of breast cancer survivors and friends. The race starts and ends at the Stadium East field after a warm up session at 6:30 am. Participants journey along Arthur Wint Drive, Old Hope Road, Lady Musgrave Road and Stanton Terrace and complete the 5K circuit at the stadium.
This long run was the first pre-season event for the track team and saw the return of Lancelot Williams, Emerson Johnson & Rouaj Shirley from the football team. They joined Fabian Montique, Jamie Hall, Brian Kazaara, Marvin Blake, Shaquille Notice and Jim Archer to comprise the Boys team present. It was also debut event for new boys Kevaun Stewart and Nadjae Archibald. Donieke Daniel, Jada Prendergast, Toni Morgan, Theresa Bent, Jodi ann Smith, Toni ann Smith, Dena Farquharson and Loren Dobbs were present to represent the girls team. A special mention should be made of Mrs. Dobbs who walked the distance and finished in an impressive manner.
